Barley Powdery Mildew (Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei): Interaction, Resistance and Tolerance

Abstract
In the present review, the effect of powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei) on growth, physiology and metabolism of barley crop (Hordeum vulgare) is discussed. Furthermore, the interactions between the host (barley) and the pathogen (B. graminis) are reviewed in details. Different types of resistance including, complete and partial resistance were discussed. Plant tolerance of diseases was also presented in details as one of the alternatives to protect crops from damage caused by the pathogen or the disease. However, this phenomenon would not involve pathogen limitation and the pathogen would not affect the crop in a way other intolerant crops would do. The use of tolerance in integrated disease management is discussed.
