NEUROTRANSMITTER CONTENTS IN BRAIN REGIONS OF ACRYLAMIDE-TREATED RATS

Abstract
Acrylamide (ACR) is a human neurotoxicity that was detected in several heat-processed foods, such as French fries and crisps. The present study evaluated the effect of acrylamide on the neurotransmitters epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in different brain regions, i.e. cerebellum, brain stem, striatum, cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, and hippocampus. Daily i.p. administration of acrylamide (30mg/kg BW ) for 1, 2, 3, & 4 weeks and its subsequent withdrawal caused a significant decreased in E, NE , DA, and GABA content in all tested brain regions at the mentioned different time intervals. This may be due to axon and nerve terminal degenerative, which caused changes in transmitter synthesis, storage uptake, release and reduction in synaptic vesicle; as a result the content of neurotransmitters is decreased.
