Abstract
This study was conducted in Biology Laboratories /College of Education for Pure Sciences in order to produce Single Cell Protein (SCP) by the use of the different plant extracts in form of solid nutrient media (Schanginia aegyptiaca, Ceratophyllum demersum, Date-palm leaves, corn cobs, wheat straw). Efficient two fungal isolates were obtained, by our Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma viride, they were selected for production of single cell protein, the results showed the following: 1) The best nutrient medium was obtained from Schanginia aegyptiaca and Date-palm leaf powder extract. 2) The best growth diameter was obtained from both isolates on the solid media, for A. niger and was 12.2 cm under pH= 6 and 30˚C with the date-palm leaf extract at a concentration of 2.5% as a carbon source and fungal percent of 3% after five days of incubation, however, for the fungal isolate T. viride the highest growth diameter was 11.4 cm at pH= 6 and 30˚C with a 3% of date-palm leaf extract as a carbon source and fungal percent 3% after six days of incubation. 3) The used extract in growth media for the two fungal isolates were characterized by good content in their nitrogen, sugar, phosphorus and total protein but with slight differences. 4) The results showed that the produced microbial protein components were 26.38% and 24.69% as crude protein; 32.61% and 31.95% of carbohydrates and 3.66% and 3.86% of RNA and DNA for the two isolates A. niger and T. viride, respectively. The produced protein from both isolates contained 16 amino acids and their quantity was 83.2 gm/100gm of protein and 82.5gm/100gm protein for the two isolates A. niger and T. viride, respectively. Tests indicted that the produced protein were free of fungal toxins. The bioexperiment of using the single cell protein produced from two isolates as a wet for the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) showed a significant increase in their weights. The highest average weights were 88.46gm and 86.41gm for the two isolates at 100% substitution after seven weeks for the two isolates A. niger and T. viride, respectively.
