OCCURRENCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE ROOT-KNOT NEMATODES MELOIDOGYNE SPP. AND THEIR HOST PLANTS IN NORTHERN EGYPT

Ibrahim KA. Ibrahim Asmaa A. Mokbel.

Abstract
Nematological survey was conducted over a 3-year period (2006-2009) to identify the root-knot nematode species (Meloidogyne spp.) associated with different host plant crops, 13 fruit trees, 33 vegetables and field crops and 34 ornamental plants in northern Egypt. A total of 1176 soil and root samples were collected from the rhizosphere of 80 host plants, grown in different 16 localities of Alexandria and El-Behera governorates. Adult females of root-knot nematodes were isolated from galled roots of the surveyed host plants and identified by the morphological characters of the perineal patterns. The root-knot nematode species Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita and M. javanica were identified in galled roots of the surveyed plants. The root-knot nematode, M. incognita was very common and prevalent with frequency of occurrence (FO) of 53.8-65.2%, followed by M. javanica with FO of 28.8-35.9%, whereas M. arenaria was less common with FO of 6.0-10.3%.

Key words: Distribution, Root, Knot Nematodes, Meloidogyne spp., Host Plants, Northern Egypt.
