DETERMINATION OF SOME HEAVY METALS AND ORGANIC ACIDS IN FIG PLANT CULTIVATED IN ORCHARD ADJACENT TO SERPENTINE SOIL

Mahmoud M. R. Hussain Abdul Rahman Othman.

Abstract
The plant and soil samples were collected in kunjirin village which is located at northeastern of Sulaimani Governorate, Iraq during August to September 2008. A cultivated fig (Ficus carica) (moraceae) and soil sample was taken from the orchard adjacent to serpentine soil in kunjirin village for study, the distribution of heavy metals concentration (cobalt, nickel, zinc, and manganese) in different organs (Leaves, branches, and Fruits) of the plant and soil was analyzed. The results showed that there were significant differences of heavy metals concentration. The highest total heavy metal concentration was found in the leaves of fig plant and accounted for ( 104.78 µg/g dry weight) and the lowest amount was shown in the fruit (43.89 µg/g dry weight ) The results clarified that the soil of studied area are contaminated with some heavy metals , especially nickel . The concentration of nickel found in the soil of studied area was (25.6 µg/g) which is near to its concentration in serpentine soil (29.0 µg/g). The concentration of heavy metals in the studied area was reflected on the plant organs especially the leaves. The results demonstrated that the concentration of heavy metals in the fruits is lower than in the leaves and stem. The heavy metal contents in the fruit were found in legally admitted limits and fruit can be consumed by human being. Different concentration of organic acids (Citric acid, Fumaric acid, malic acid, and oxalic acid) were analyzed, the highest total organic acids were found in the plant fruit with the concentration of (178.9 µg/g dry weight), and the lower amount were found in the branches with the concentration of (55.12 µg/g dry weight).

Key words: Heavy metals, organic acids, fig plant, serpentine soil
