Abstract
Three species of Enteromorpha (L) Link were
collected during April, 2006 from Abu Qir Bay of
Alexandria. These species were identified as E.
intestinalis (L) Link, E. linza (L) J. Agadh and E.
compressa (L) Nees. Enzyme assay proved that E.
intestinalis and E. linza contained constitutive
urease enzyme while E. compressa contained
inducible urease. The activity of the enzyme was
very high in E. compressa with hepes buffer at pH 8.
With E. intestinalis and E. linza, it showed a great
affinity for tris buffer at pH 8.5. The optimum
temperature for urease activity in the three algae
was 25-30°C. Hydroxyurea and hydroxomic acids
were found to inhibit urease of E. intestinalis and E.
linza, while E. compressa was inhibited by thiourea
and benzamide. Active transport was the
mechanism for urea uptake in E. intestinalis and E.
linza; passive transport replaced it in E. compressa.
All the urea taken by the cells (labeled and nonlabeled)
was fractionated into a large ethanol
insoluble part and a small soluble portion. Most of
the radioactivity in the largest part found its way to
other cell constituents rather than protein. Also, a
small portion of the soluble fraction was directed
towards free amino acid fractions. 14C-urea
metabolism in these algae was directed mainly to
other cell constituents while the metabolism of nonlabeled
urea was directed mainly towards protein
formation; most of non-labeled came from the
storage pool of amino acids in addition to de novo
synthesis. According to physiological bases used in
this investigation, one can conclude that there is a
similarity between E. intestinalis and E. linza and
between E. linza and Ulva lactuca. E. compressa
was found to posses some physiological characters
resembling that of Scenedesmus. This resemblance
may focus the light on E. compressa as intermediate
species between family Scendesmaceae of order
Chlorococcales and family Ulvaceae of order
Ulvales.
