GENETIC DIVERSITY AMONG IPOMEA CARNEA JACQ. POPULATIONS FROM DIFFERENT HABITAT TYPES IN NILE-DELTA REGION OF EGYPT

Abstract
Seed protein and isozyme variations were revealed by SDS-PAGE among 25 populations of Ipomea carnea Jacq. representing different localities and habitat types in Nile Delta region in Egypt.
Genes expressions reflected as banding patterns of seed storage-proteins as well as of six isozymes (Acp, Akp, Est, Got, Per and Cbp) revealed a great inter-population variations. These variations indicate a high genetic diversity among ecotypes of I. carnea.
NTSYS analysis of proteins- and isozymes-results delimited the studied populations into two major groups which were further subdivided into many clusters depending on habitat type. This diversity might have been originated from significant variation in chromosome number, variable climatic conditions, soil composition, reproduction strategy, mating system, life cycle longevity, and mutation.
